Canine Inertia
noun
- a tendency to do nothing or remain unchanged.
- PHYSICS – a property of matter by which it continues in its existing state of rest or uniform motion in a straight line, unless that state is changed by an external force.
Newton’s first law of motion states that objects at rest and an object in motion stays in motion unless acted upon by an external force. How does this relate to dog training? A dog’s behavior will remain constant unless acted on by an external force. In an ideal setting we are the external force, shaping our dog to become a well-adjusted member of the family. However, other external forces exist and they may compete with us when shaping behavior. If we choose not to act upon our dog’s current path, the behavior can become worse.
